Mary Elizabeth Troutman Birdwell – 1938 > 2021


Mary Elizabeth Troutman Birdwell of Hoover, died on March 31, 2021, in Atlanta, GA. Mary was born December 25, 1938 in Blount County, TN, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Trotter) Troutman. She was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge, TN, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, and a master’s degree from the University of Montevallo. She was married to Roy Dean Birdwell. Mary had a long and storied career in public school education in Alabama and Florida as a teacher and coach. Known as Coach Bird to her student athletes, she led her teams in gymnastics, track and field, and cross country to multiple championships. She finished her career at Hoover High School, and following her retirement in 2003, the high school track was named Mary Birdwell Track in recognition of her teams’ many achievements. In retirement, Mary continued to operate meets all over the country for USA Track and Field, and coach athletes in cross country and track and field at Birmingham Southern College. She is a member of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and the Oak Ridge High School Hall of Fame. Survivors include her 2 sons, Paul Bryant Birdwell (Liz) and Andrew Craig Birdwell, a granddaughter, Emily Birdwell, a brother, Sam Troutman, an aunt, Peggy Tubbs, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Patricia Sue Troutman. A memorial service will be held at Hoover High School on Sunday, April 18, at 1:00 pm.
